High-Lift vs. Mulching vs. Gator Blades: Which Should You Choose?

Two blades can be the same length and fit the same spindle but cut very differently. The difference is the shape of the blade, which controls how much air it moves and what happens to the clippings.

Standard (medium) lift

The all-round choice and what many mowers ship with. The trailing edge is bent up moderately to create airflow. It handles side discharge and light bagging well and puts less load on the engine than a high-lift blade.

High lift

High-lift blades have a taller, more aggressive bend that moves more air. That pulls grass upright for a cleaner cut and pushes clippings hard into a bagger or out the chute.

  • Best for: bagging, thick or tall grass, and commercial side-discharge mowing.
  • Trade-offs: uses more engine power and can throw more dust and sand.

Low lift (sand blades)

Low-lift blades have very little bend. They move less air, so they kick up less sand and dirt and wear more slowly in sandy soil. Choose these if you mow sandy or dusty ground.

Mulching blades

Mulching blades have a curved, longer cutting surface that keeps clippings in the deck and cuts them several times into fine pieces. The fine clippings drop back into the lawn and break down quickly. Many decks need a mulching kit or plate to mulch properly, so check your mower before switching.

Oregon Gator blades

Gator blades are Oregon's toothed design. The angled teeth redirect airflow so clippings stay in front of the cutting edge and get re-cut finer, which means less bagging and raking. They also work well for mulching leaves in the fall.

  • Gator G3 ("3-in-1"): designed to bag, mulch and side-discharge, in wet, dry or sandy conditions. A good choice if you switch between modes.
  • Gator G6: Oregon's heaviest-duty Gator, 1/4" thick and 3" wide with carbide fused into the cutting edge so it stays sharp longer. Built for commercial mowers.

Gator blades can be sharpened like a standard blade.

Quick picker

  • Mostly bagging: high lift or Gator G3.
  • Mostly mulching: mulching blade or Gator G3 (with your deck's mulching kit).
  • Side discharge, residential: standard lift.
  • Sandy soil: low-lift sand blade.
  • Commercial, heavy use: high lift or Gator G6.

Whatever style you pick, it must still match your mower's length, center hole and OEM number. See how to find the right replacement blade, then browse our lawn mower blades.
